Federal Voluntary Service (BFD)

Looking for a year of purpose, community, and real change – for yourself or someone else? Then join us for a year of service in the Federal Voluntary Service (BFD)!
- What is the Federal Voluntary Service?
The Federal Voluntary Service (BFD) is a volunteer program open to anyone who wants to get involved in society and gain hands-on experience – whether you’ve just finished school, are in a transitional phase, or later in life.
In the BFD, you work in a non-profit organization, such as in the social, environmental, or cultural sector. You support the team, contribute your own ideas, and gain exciting insights into the professional world.
What makes the BFD special:
- Open to everyone aged 16 and up, with no upper age limit
- Also available for people over 27 (e.g. receiving citizen’s income, pension, or disability benefits)
- You receive monthly allowance, paid vacation, and participate in educational seminars.
- Duration: typically 12 months, with the possibility of extension
- Is there financial support?
Yes! You receive a monthly allowance. You are also entitled to paid vacation.
Good to know: If you receive citizen’s income (Bürgergeld) or a pension, you can still take part in the BFD. The allowance is not fully counted against your benefits. In many cases, additional income is possible.
